I saw a stagehand settin' up the walls of Kingdom City with the merchants of gold and the silver ladies they were dressin' up the walls while the kingdom sank said, "they lost our money, but they just got a bank." Saw a strange hand holding up the walls of our town with a child's pride and one hand on the ground and the Mayor left but the walls still caved It all came to an end as we all come and wait We will come and wait I saw a rainstorm headin' to the banks of our city with righteous winds all void of pity we were standing on the roof as the shore washed away said, "nowhere to go, but got nowhere to stay." I saw a loose end tying up the hands of that storm heard a stranger's voice on a microphone and some good folks left but the sun still came it was drowning us as we all come and wait We will come and wait

oh mama hear me where you going? where you been? i've been sleeping on that seaside waiting for life to begin. oh mama hear me i've been lying here too long there's a tunnel through the mountain i'll be leaving here at dawn here at dawn. sayin' i'm going to the other side (going to the other side) set eyes upon the sun and take a ride (gonna take a ride tonight) i'm going to the other side (going to the other side) set eyes upon the sun and take a ride take a ride. oh mama hear me where's the pilot in the fog? he was searching for salvation when the mountain came along oh mama hear me now he's sleeping with those stars yes, he's wearing borrowed wings i hear him howling at the dawn at the dawn. sayin' i'm going to the other side (going to the other side) set eyes upon the sun and take a ride (gonna take a ride tonight) i'm going to the other side (going to the other side) set eyes upon the sun and take a ride take a ride. oh mama hear me i've been dreaming of that beach where the million mile breezes bring your body in my reach oh mama hear me i've been feeling so alone but the past is just the prologue and the present is a song.

There's a bed with lilac roses and some woods that could hold us and our dogs. There are fathers in the skies and a lonesome sailor's cries in the dark. There's an unworn ring beside us and a fire that describes why it's there and with distance it will burn but it could fall apart in turn, but would we care? Would we care? After days Afternoon I'll be there someday soon. Someday soon. There's a crowd with sooted faces and a window that displays the market square and if i can't divide my soul into little specks of gold would you care? there's my father driving on to the woods where he belongs to in the north there are clouds that open wide to a city kept inside of its doors and if it's hopefulness he finds in the tumbling waves of time where he lays as the smokerings travel on well, i hope he hears this song to break the day break the day. And as we are kept inside all those riders of the tide will make it home. Make it home.

about

"Riders of the Tide" is the full-band followup to Something Obscure, the acclaimed solo premiere of Derek Nelson.

Recorded over four days in September at Engine Studios by Neil Strauch (Bonnie Prince Billy, Iron and Wine), and written and arranged by The Musicians, the songs on "Riders of the Tide" mark a distinct evolution from the sounds heard on its sparse predecessor.

While more haunting, driving and urgent, "Riders of the Tide" keeps in touch with the sound that led the band to headline Chicago's largest clubs in its first year.
